Melissa's Story

Writer's picture: Breastfeeding JournalBreastfeeding Journal

My first breast feeding journey started off rocky. Grace took to the boob quite quickly but not as quick as I wanted. By day 3 she was severely jaundice and not feeding at all. She was admitted to hospital for light therapy and all the doctors were trying to push me to express and bottle feed her instead of breast as they couldn’t monitor how much she was having. I pushed back and said absolutely not. My milk came in whilst we were in hospital and she thrived from that day on. My 5lb 4oz baby became the most scrumptious chubby baby with the most gorgeous fat rolls on her arms and legs. I aimed to do 2 years but just 5 days before her 1st birthday I was admitted to hospital with an infected wisdom tooth. They told me the antibiotics they gave me would be dangerous for Grace to ingest through my milk. Before they admitted me I begged them to let me come home to feed my baby one last time. Sat at my mums I fed her for the last time, crying, grieving the abrupt and unexpected end to my first feeding journey. I now have another beautiful little girl called Arabella who unlike her sister has had no issues with feeding and her journey is still on going. It’s hard work but to know my body not only grew them on the inside but I working overtime to produce milk to sustain them on the outside makes me so proud of myself and all breastfeeding mums out there 💖
